[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 those who spread corruption on earth instead of setting things to rights!" 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
