The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 His wife and his brother, 12 his kinsmen who gave him refuge (from hardship) 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It will claim all such as turn their backs [on what is right,] and turn away [from the truth,] 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 when misfortune touches him he starts lamenting, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 Except those devoted to Salat (prayers) 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For the beggar and the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 and guard their private parts 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
