The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the sun and his brightness, 1 And by the moon as it follows it (the sun); 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 And the night when it draws a veil over it, 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 and by the earth and That which extended it! 6 by the soul and Who shaped it 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow, 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 But they rejected his statement as a lie and hamstrung the she-camel. For that crime their Lord rumbled down upon them, utterly razing them to the ground. 14 He has no fear of its sequel. 15
