The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Recite in the name of your Lord who created - 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 who taught by the pen, 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Surely to your Lord is the return. 8 What is your opinion – regarding him who forbids – 9 a worshiper when he prays. 10 Hast thou considered whether he is on the right way, 11 Or enjoineth piety? 12 Hast thou seen if he denieth (Allah's guidance) and is froward? 13 Does he not know that God sees? 14 No indeed; surely, if he gives not over, We shall seize him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 So let him call his associates, 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]! ۩ 19
