The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 Consider the sky and its wondrous make, 5 The earth and its spreading out, 6 Consider the human self, and how it is formed in accordance with what it is meant to be, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 The Thamud tribe rejected the truth because of their arrogance, 11 Behold, the most wicked man among them was deputed (for impiety). 12 although God's apostle had told them, "It is a she-camel belonging to God, so let her drink [and do her no harm]!" 13 But they denied him, and they hamstrung her, so Allah doomed them for their sin and rased (their dwellings). 14 and He fears not the issue thereof. 15
