Aaron had indeed told them earlier: "O my people, you are being only misled with this. Surely your Lord is Ar-Rahman. So follow me and obey my command." 90 They replied, "We shall not cease to worship it until Moses returns to us." 91 Moses said to Aaron, "What prevented you, when you saw that they had gone astray, 92 That thou followedst me not? Hast thou then disobeyed my order? 93 He said: O son of my mother! Clutch not my beard nor my head! I feared lest thou shouldst say: Thou hast caused division among the Children of Israel, and hast not waited for my word. 94 He said: What was then your object, O Samiri? 95 He said, "I perceived what they did not see. So I took a handful [of dust] from the footprint of the Messenger and threw it in [the calf]. That is what my inner self prompted me to do." 96 (Moses) said: "Go hence! All your life you are (cursed) to say: 'Do not touch me; and a threat hangs over you which you will not be able to escape. Look at your god to whom you are so attached: We shall verily burn it, and disperse its ashes into the sea. 97 Your only deity is God, there is no deity but Him. His knowledge encompasses all things." 98 Thus We relate to you the history of past events, and We have given you a reminder [the Quran] from Us. 99 Whosoever turns away from it, upon the Day of Resurrection He shall bear a fardel, 100 [Abiding] eternally therein, and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load - 101 The Day whereon the trumpet will be blown into, and We shall gather the culprits on that Day blear-eyed, 102 They shall consult together secretly: You did tarry but ten (centuries). 103 We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: "You stayed no longer than a day!" 104
