20 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Pen (Al-Qalam) before The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
O you who are wrapped up in your mantle, 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 (a half of it, or diminish a little, 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 Indeed We shall soon ordain a heavy responsibility upon you. 5 Truly the rising by night is most potent for governing (the soul), and most suitable for (framing) the Word (of Prayer and Praise). 6 Indeed, for you by day is prolonged occupation. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with (exclusive) devotion. 8 Lord of the East and Lord of the West there is no God except Him, therefore make Him your sole Trustee of affairs. 9 And have patience with what they say, and leave them with noble (dignity). 10 And leave Me and the rejecters, the possessors of ease and plenty, and respite them a little. 11 Verily, with Us are fetters (to bind them), and a raging Fire. 12 And a food that chokes, and a painful torment. 13 On the Day the earth and the mountains will convulse and the mountains will become a heap of sand pouring down. 14 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 If you disbelieve, how will you guard yourself against the Day that will make children gray haired, 17 On that day, the heavens will be rent asunder. This is the decree of God which has already been ordained. 18 This, verily, is a reminder: let him who wills, then set out on a way to his Sustainer! 19
