In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O you wrapped in garments (i.e. Prophet Muhammad SAW)! 1 stand up to pray for much of the night. 2 A half of it or a little less 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 Behold, We shall bestow upon thee a weighty message 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 And remember the Name of thy Lord, and devote thyself unto Him very devoutly. 8 He is the Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He. So take Him alone for your Guardian, 9 And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 for with Us there are fetters, and a furnace, 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment - 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have sent you a Messenger, who will witness your deeds, just as We sent a Messenger to the Pharaoh. 15 and Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, whereupon We took him to task with a crushing grip. 16 If you persist in disbelieving, how will you guard yourself against the (woe of the) Day that will turn children grey-haired, 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 Verily this is an Admonition: therefore, whoso will, let him take a (straight) path to his Lord! 19
