۞ Have you (O Muhammad SAW) not observed the hypocrites who say to their friends among the people of the Scripture who disbelieve: "(By Allah) If you are expelled, we (too) indeed will go out with you, and we shall never obey any one against you, and if you are attacked (in fight), we shall indeed help you." But Allah is Witness, that they verily, are liars. 11 If they are expelled or fought against, they will not go with them, nor will they help them. Indeed, if they helped them, they would turn their backs and then they would not be helped. 12 Ye are more awful as a fear in their bosoms than Allah. That is because they are a folk who understand not. 13 They will not fight you (even) together, except in fortified townships, or from behind walls. Strong is their fighting (spirit) amongst themselves: thou wouldst think they were united, but their hearts are divided: that is because they are a people devoid of wisdom. 14 [Theirs is] like the example of those shortly before them: they tasted the bad consequence of their affair, and they will have a painful punishment. 15 [The hypocrites are] like the example of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of the worlds." 16 In the end both will be in the Fire, and will abide in it. That is the recompense of the wrong-doers. 17
