The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 Hath created man from a clot! 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 He Who taught (the use of) the pen,- 4 He taught the human being what he did not know. 5 Nay, surely man transgresses; 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Bethinkest thou him who forbiddeth, 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Did you consider: what if he is on the Right Way, 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 15 his lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then let him call his associates; 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 No, not at all. Never obey him. But prostrate yourself and become nigh (to your Lord). ۩ 19
