The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn 2 And your Lord glorify 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 do not bestow a favour in the expectation of receiving more in return; 6 And persevere in the way of your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that Day will be a hard and distressing Day. 9 for the unbelievers not easy. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and to whom I have granted resources in abundance, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 Ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he thought; 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 and in the end he turns his back [on Our message,] and glories in his arrogance, 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what will make you know exactly what Hell-fire is? 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 Scorching the skin. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
