The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the Sun and his (glorious) splendour; 1 By the moon when it followeth it, 2 by the day when it brightens the earth, 3 And the night when it enshroudeth him, 4 and by the sky and by Him Who made it; 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 and by the soul and that (Power) which designed it 7 and how it is imbued with moral failings as well as with consciousness of God! 8 Indeed he succeeds who purifies his ownself (i.e. obeys and performs all that Allah ordered, by following the true Faith of Islamic Monotheism and by doing righteous good deeds). 9 and he who suppresses it will be ruined. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 When the most wicked man among them went forth (to kill the she-camel). 12 And the apostle of God had to tell them: "This is God's she-camel, let her drink." 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. 15
