He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be admonished, and the admonition profit him? 4 As to one who regards Himself as self-sufficient, 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 but as for him who came unto thee full of eagerness 8 and fearfully, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 Nay, (do not do like this), indeed it (these Verses of this Quran) are an admonition, 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 upon pages high-honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and virtuous scribes. 16 Perish the human! How unthankful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm He creates him, and thereupon determines his nature, 19 Then He makes the Path easy for him; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 and then, whenever He wishes, He will raise him back to life. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 We send down abundant water, 25 And We split the earth in fragments, 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 and olives and palms, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 At length, when there comes the Deafening Noise,- 33 On the Day whereon a man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day, to every one of them will his own state be of sufficient concern. 37 Some faces on that day shall shine 38 laughing and joyful, 39 And faces on that Day! upon them shall be gloom. 40 and covered by darkness. 41 Those! they are the infidels, the ungodly. 42
