A company of the former peoples 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 They used to say: “What! Once we are dead and are reduced to dust and bones, shall we still be raised to a new life from the dead? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 “They will all be gathered together – on the appointed time of the known day.” 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 from changing your Forms and creating you (again) in (forms) that ye know not. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 Had We wanted, We could have made it salty. Why then do you not give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
