Now, behold, this [divine writ] has indeed been bestowed from on high by the Sustainer of all the worlds: 192 The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down 193 Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] - that you may be of the warners - 194 (a revelation) in clear Arabic language, 195 And verily it is in the Scriptures of the ancients. 196 And was this not a sign for them, that the scholars of the Descendants of Israel may recognise this Prophet? 197 But [even] had We bestowed it from on high upon any of the non-Arabs, 198 and he had recited it to them, they would not have believed in it. 199 In this wise have We made way for it into the hearts of the culprits. 200 they will not believe in it till they behold the grievous suffering 201 And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not. 202 They will therefore say, “Will we get some respite?” 203 Do they want to hasten Our punishment? 204 What thinkest thou? If We give them enjoyment of days for many years, 205 and thereupon that [chastisement] which they were promised befalls them 206 What shall that which they enjoyed avail them? 207 We never destroyed any town without first sending to them warning and guidance. 208 as a reminder from Us: We are never unjust. 209 It was not the satans who brought it down: 210 It would neither suit them nor would they be able (to produce it). 211 Verily far from hearing are they removed. 212 So do not call any other god beside Allah lest you become of those who will be punished, 213 And warn thou thy clan, the nearest ones. 214 and be meek to the believers who follow you. 215 but if they disobey thee, say: "I am free of responsibility for aught that you may do!" 216 And put your trust in the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful, 217 Who observes you when you rise (to pray) 218 and observes your movements among those who prostrate themselves. 219 Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Knower. 220 [And] shall I tell you upon whom it is that those evil spirits descend? 221 They descend on every great accuser, extreme sinner. (The magicians) 222 on those who whisper hearsay in the ears of people; and most of them are liars. 223 And as to the poets, those who go astray follow them. 224 Seest thou not that they wander distracted in every valley?- 225 and they say what they do not do? 226 Except those who believe and do the right, and remember God a great deal, who retaliate only when they have been wronged. Yet the oppressors will now come to know through what reversals they will be overthrown! 227
