۞ (God will command the angels), "Gather together the unjust, their spouses, and what they had worshipped 22 Instead of Allah, and lead them to the path to hell; 23 "But stop them, verily they are to be questioned. 24 'But what is the matter with you that you cannot help one another?,'" 25 Nay, but on that Day they would willingly surrender [to God]; 26 And some of them draw near unto others, mutually questioning. 27 They shall say: Surely you used to come to us from the right side. 28 They will say: nay! ye yourselves were not believers. 29 We had no power over you. You were a rebellious people, 30 So the word of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste [punishment]. 31 We seduced you astray; verily we were ourselves the seduced ones. 32 And verily, on that Day they all will share in their common suffering. 33 That is how We deal with sinners. 34 Surely they used to behave proudly when it was said to them: There is no god but Allah; 35 and said: 'Are we to renounce our gods for the sake of a mad poet' 36 Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the apostles. 37 Behold, you will indeed taste grievous suffering [in the life to come,] 38 and be rewarded only according to your deeds." 39 But the sincere servants of God 40 shall have a known provision -- 41 and fruits while they are honored. 42 In Gardens of Delight. 43 They will be seated upon couches set face to face; 44 Round them will be passed a cup of pure wine; 45 White, delicious to those who drink. 46 No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated. 47 And with them shall be damsels of refraining looks, large-eyed 48 (Pure) as they were hidden eggs (of the ostrich). 49 So one among them turns to the other, questioning. – 50 The speaker among them said, “I had a companion.” – 51 who was wont to ask [me,] 'Why - art thou really one of those who believe it to be true 52 Shall we be recompensed for our deeds after we die and become bones and dust? 53 He said (to others on the thrones), “Will you take a glimpse (into hell) below?” 54 Then he looks, and sees him in the midst of Hell. 55 He will say to his friend in hell, "By God, you almost destroyed me. 56 But for the Favor of Allah I should have surely been among those who were arraigned (with you in Hell). 57 Then he will say [to his blessed companions], "Are we not going to die, 58 except for our first death, and are we not chastised? 59 Lo! this is the supreme triumph. 60 For the like of this let the workers work. 61 Is that better by way of hospitality or the Zaqqum tree, 62 which We have made as a torment for the unjust? 63 For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hellfire: 64 Its spathes are like the prickly pear. 65 and they eat of it, and of it fill their bellies, 66 then on top of it they have a brew of boiling water, 67 Then surely their return is towards hell. 68 Surely they found their fathers going astray, 69 So they in their footsteps are rushing. 70 yet before them most of the ancients went astray, 71 And assuredly We sent among them warners. 72 Look, then how was the end of those who had been warned, 73 Not so the chosen servants of God. 74
