a good many of olden times, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 "All will surely be gathered together for appointed Meeting of a known Day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Drinkers even as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 that We may exchange the likes of you, and make you to grow again in a fashion you know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
