The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
۞ No, I swear by this country (Mecca), 1 and thou art a lodger in this land; 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says, “I destroyed vast wealth.” 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what will make you comprehend what the uphill road is? 12 (It is) Freeing a neck (slave, etc.) 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 To an orphan near of kin. 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 Over them will be fire closed in. 20
