The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 created the human from a (blood) clot. 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 In that he looketh upon himself as self-sufficient. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A votary when he turns to his devotions? 10 Have you seen if he was upon guidance 11 or orders piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Does he not realize that God sees him? 14 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
