▼ 56 The Inevitable
Al-Waaqe'ah 2 of 3
a good many of olden times, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 The Companions of the Left. O Companions of the Left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 neither cool nor good. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?" 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
