We did send Moses aforetime, with Our Signs, to Pharaoh and his Chiefs: He said, "I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) behold! They laughed at them. 47 And We did not show them a sign but it was greater than its like, and We overtook them with chastisement that they may turn. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 Then when We had removed from them the torment, behold they were breaking their promise. 50 And the Pharaoh said to his people: "O people, is not mine the kingdom of Egypt and these rivers that flow at my feet? Can you still not comprehend? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Wherefore, then, have bracelets of gold not been set upon him, and wherefore have not angels come with him accompanying 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So when they incurred Our wrath, We exacted retribution from them, and drowned them all, 55 So We made them a bygone fable and a lesson for the latter generations. 56
