The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A questioner asked of a chastisement about to fall 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 behold, men look upon that [reckoning] as something far away 6 But We see it [as] near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 And the hills become as flakes of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 His wife and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those who establish prayer. 22 Those who are constant at their prayer 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 For the petitioner and the deprived - 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 whereas such as seek to go beyond that [limit] are truly transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
