The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 For this I ask of you no wage; my wage falls only upon the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 “And fields and palm-trees, with delicate tendrils?” 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
