The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 Pollution shun! 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 but unto thy Sustainer turn in patience. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 For the disbelievers - not easy. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he looked around, 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It neither leaves, nor spares. 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
