The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 – this city wherein you have been rendered violable– 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 a tongue, and two lips? 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep. 11 What could let you know what the height is! 12 It is the freeing of a slave 13 Or the giving of food in a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 Then he became one of those who believed, and recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 But those who disbelieve in Our verses, they are the Companions of the Left, 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
