The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 and That which created the male and the female, 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 And verify Ours is both the Hereafter and the life present. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 he that spends his possessions [on others] so that he might grow in purity 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 And he is going to be satisfied. 21
