a good many of olden times, 39 And a company of the later peoples. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 And in the shadow of a burning smoke. 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Shall most surely be gathered together for the appointed hour of a known day. 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 And shall be drinkers thereon of boiling water. 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Do you give it its increase, or are We the giver? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 "We are ruined, 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
