The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By oath of the night when it covers 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And who belieth the Good, 9 We shall surely ease him to the Hardship; 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Therefore I warn you of the fire that flames: 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who denied [the truth], and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
