The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Read in the name of your Lord Who created. 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite: and your Lord is Most Generous, 3 who, by the pen, taught the human being: 4 Hath taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 for he believes himself to be self-sufficient. 7 truly, all will return to your Lord. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 11 Or enjoins righteousness? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Knows he not that Allah does see (what he does)? 14 No! If he does not desist, We will surely drag him by the forelock - 15 A forelock that lies, is sinful. 16 So let him call his associates, 17 We shall summon the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, heed him not: But bow down in adoration, and bring thyself the closer (to Allah)! ۩ 19
