Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
KAF HA YA 'AIN SAD. 1 Mention of the mercy of thy Lord to His bondman Zakariyya. 2 Recall what time he cried unto his Lord with a cry secret. 3 Saying: My Lord! Lo! the bones of me wax feeble and my head is shining with grey hair, and I have never been unblest in prayer to Thee, my Lord. 4 And verily I fear my kindred after me, and my wife hath been barren; so bestow on me from before Thee an heir. 5 Who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]." 6 (It was said unto him): O Zachariah! Lo! We bring thee tidings of a son whose name is John; We have given the same name to none before (him). 7 He said, "Lord, how can I have a son? My wife is barren and I have reached an extremely old age". 8 (The angel) said, "This is true, but your Lord says, 'For Me it is easy; I created you when you did not exist". 9 [Zakariya (Zachariah)] said: "My Lord! Appoint for me a sign." He said: "Your sign is that you shall not speak unto mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect." 10 So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' 11 O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child 12 And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing. 13 and cherishing to his parents. Never was he insolent or rebellious. 14 So peace on him the day he was born, the day he will die, and the day that he will be raised from the dead. 15
