The Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him: "He is certainly a clever magician. 34 who seeks to expel you from your land by his sorcery. What is your counsel' 35 They said: put off him and his brother, and send unto the cities callers. 36 "And bring up to thee all (our) sorcerers well-versed." 37 So all the magicians gathered together at the appointed time 38 And it was said to the people: Will you gather together? 39 Haply we shall follow the sorcerers if it should be they are the victors.' 40 And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?" 41 He said: yea; and ye shall verily then be of those brought nigh. 42 Moses said to them: "Throw ye - that which ye are about to throw!" 43 Thereupon they threw down their ropes and their rods, and said: "By the glory of Pharaoh, we shall prevail." 44 [But] then Moses threw his staff - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions. 45 The magicians fell down prostrate, 46 Saying: "We believe in the Lord of the Worlds, 47 the Lord of Moses and Aaron.' 48 He (Pharaoh) said: 'You have believed him before I have given you permission. He is the chief of you who has taught you sorcery. But you shall know. I will surely cut off on opposite sides a hand and a foot, and crucify you all.' 49 'There is no harm' they replied, 'for surely to our Lord we are turning. 50 Lo! we ardently hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we are the first of the believers. 51
