The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the star when it descends, 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 One vigorous; and he grew clear to view 6 And he was on the horizon of the highest heaven. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 And was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer, 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 Near it is the Garden of Abode. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 The sight turned not aside, nor it exceeded. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 That is indeed an unjust division. 22 They are naught but names yourselves have named, and your fathers; God has sent down no authority touching them. They follow only surmise, and what the souls desire; and yet guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
