The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 in which you are now living 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 (It is) to free a slave, 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
