[AND the tribe of] Ad gave the lie to [one of God's] message-bearers 123 Recall, when their brother Hud said to them: "Have you no fear? 124 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 125 "Therefore fear Allah and obey me." 126 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 127 "Will you, in your wanton folly, build [idolatrous] altars on every height, 128 "And do you get for yourselves palaces (fine buildings) as if you will live therein for ever. 129 and when you strike you strike like tyrants? 130 So fear Allah, and obey me. 131 "Fear Him Who has aided you with the things you know." 132 amply provided you with flocks, and children, 133 And orchards and springs. 134 Surely I fear for you the chastisement of a grievous day 135 They said, 'Alike it is to us, whether thou admonishest, or art not one of the admonishers; 136 This has been happening all along. 137 "And we are not the ones to receive Pains and Penalties!" 138 So they belied him, and We destroyed them. Verily! In this is indeed a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 139 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 140
