The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 so fear you God, and obey you me.' 144 I do not ask any recompense of you for this. My reward is due from none but the Lord of all the worlds. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 carving comfortable houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
