We also sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said, 'Surely, I am the Messenger of the Lord of all Being.' 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 although each sign that We showed them was weightier than the preceding one: and [each time] We took them to task through suffering, so that they might return [to Us]. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 “Or that I am better than him, for he is lowly – and he does not seem to talk plainly.” 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 So he incited his people to levity and they obeyed him: surely they were a transgressing people. 54 And when they angered Us, We took retribution from them and drowned them all. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
