The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall- 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 To whom the angels and the soul take a day to ascend, whose length is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore be patient, with a beautiful patience; 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 And We see it nigh. 7 Upon the day when heaven shall be as molten copper 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 tearing away his skin! 16 and it will claim all those who turned their backs [on the true faith] and turned away [from the truth], 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And refraining, when good reaches him. 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 who acknowledge the Day of Judgment, 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord 27 for none is secure from the punishment of their Lord, 28 And those who preserve their chastity 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
