The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Recall when their brother Salih said to them: "Have you no fear?" 142 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 So the punishment overtook them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 158 And indeed your Lord – only He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
