Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
Ha Mim! 1 I swear by the Book that makes manifest (the truth). 2 We sent it down during a Blessed Night: for We (ever) wish to warn (against Evil). 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Enveloping the people: this will be a Penalty Grievous. 11 (They will say): "Our Lord! Remove the torment from us, really we shall become believers!" 12 How can they benefit from admonition, seeing that a messenger had already come to them explaining things clearly? 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 If We remove the torment a little, you revert back (to misdeeds). 15 The day that We shall seize them with a grievous hold, We will indeed castigate them. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Saying: restore to me the bondmen of Allah, verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 I have taken refuge in my Lord and your Lord against your stoning me to death. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 Then he called upon his Lord: “These are a criminal people.” 22 "Journey by night with My devotees," (it was said); "you will certainly be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And pleasant things wherein they took delight! 27 Thus (it was)! And We made other people inherit them (i.e. We made the Children of Israel to inherit the kingdom of Egypt). 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
