A multitude of those of old 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke. 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and had persisted in the Great Sin. 46 And said: "What! When we are dead and turned to dust and bones, shall we then be raised again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 "We are ruined, 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We willed, We verily could make it salt (and undrinkable), why then do you not give thanks (to Allah)? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
