Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 And [by] the even [number] and the odd 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 is there not in this strong evidence for a man of sense? 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the vale, 9 And with Pharaoh, firm of might, 10 Who terrorised the region, 11 and caused much corruption in them: 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Indeed, your Lord is in observation. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me." 15 But when He tests him by restricting his provision, he says: 'My Lord has humiliated me' 16 But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 and you devour the inheritance with greed, 19 and you love wealth with boundless love! 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and Gehenna is brought out, upon that day man will remember; and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 On that Day no one will punish as He punishes, 25 And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers]. 26 [But to the righteous, God will say], "O soul at peace, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Join My servants. 29 And enter My Paradise." 30
