The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And the creating of the male and the female, 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And accepts the best, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 His wealth will not avail him when he falls into ruin. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 Wherefore I have warned you of Fire flaming, 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 the Godfearing who spends his wealth to purify himself; 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
