The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
READ IN THE name of your Lord who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 No indeed; surely Man waxes insolent, 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Lo! unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Have you seen if he is upon guidance 11 and enjoins piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 Indeed, if he does not desist, We will seize him by the forelock, 15 his lying sinful forelock. 16 So let him summon his helpmates; 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 By no means! Obey not thou him. Continue to adore, and continue to draw nigh. ۩ 19
