Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 “Therefore fear Allah and obey me.” 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 "Will you be left secure in that which you have here? 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 So fear God and obey me: 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 He said, "This is a she-camel. She will have her share of water as you have your share, each on a certain day. 155 and do not touch her with malice so that there seize you the chastisement of a dreadful day.' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
