Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 As commands from Us. It is indeed We who send (messengers), 5 as a mercy from your Lord, He hears all and knows all, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 But they are in doubt, amusing themselves. 9 But watch thou (O Muhammad) for the day when the sky will produce visible smoke 10 Which would envelope mankind. That would be a grievous affliction. 11 'Our Lord, remove this punishment from us, we are believers' 12 But how will they avail themselves of the Reminder, when a clear Messenger had already come to them 13 Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman." 14 Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief]. 15 on the Day when We shall seize [all sinners] with a most mighty onslaught, We shall, verily, inflict Our retribution [on you as well]! 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 If you do not believe in me, at least keep away from me." 21 Then he cried out to his Lord, "These are sinful people." 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 and cornfields and splendid buildings, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus (it was), and We gave them as a heritage to another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
