The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ NAY! I call to witness this land 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 What, does he think none has power over him, 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Thinks he that none sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and guided him on the two highways? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 Ah, what will convey unto thee what the Ascent is! - 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphan near of kin, 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion. 17 Those are the companions of the right. 18 As for those who disbelieve in Our revelations, they are the people of the left 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
