The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 By the Day as it appears in glory; 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefor have I warned you of the flaming Fire 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
