The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thy Lord do thou magnify! 3 Purify your inner self, 4 Pollution shun! 5 And do not favour others in order to receive more. 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 and who still desires more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 scorching the flesh; 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
