The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And your garments do purify, 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 and to whose life I gave so wide a scope: 14 yet he is eager that I increase him. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 then he frowned and scowled, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then he said: "This is nothing but magic from that of old; 24 This is naught else than speech of mortal man. 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 - Ah, what will convey unto thee what that burning is! - 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
