The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Do you think that you will be left secure [forever] -- 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They said: Thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are but a human like ourselves. Produce for us a sign, if you are of the truthful' 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 and torment struck them. In this there is evidence of the Truth, yet many people do not have any faith. 158 And lo! thy Lord! He is indeed the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
